Wendell Morris Berry was born on August 11, 1934, in Keller, Texas, to Jesse and Vesta (Austin) Berry and peacefully passed away on February 16, 2025, in Bridgeport, Texas.

Wendell was a remarkable individual who was known as a force to be reckoned with. He never met a stranger and had a stubborn streak that defined his strong character.

From a young age, he exhibited a great work ethic, starting to work on the farm when he was just six years old. Even in his later years, when he became blind, Wendell remained active and expressed a desire to continue working. He often said he "never worked a day, because work was a game he always wanted to win." His inability to sit still was a testament to his lively spirit.

Wendell was deeply proud of his family and dedicated much of his time to serving the community. He held positions on various boards, showcasing his commitment to making a difference. He played a pivotal role in starting the EMS service in Wise County as a commissioner and was instrumental in launching the Meals on Wheels program in Chico. Additionally, he helped establish clothing funds at both Chico and Paradise independent school districts, helping to support local families in need.

Those left to cherish his memory are his son, Wendell Berry, Jr. and wife Holly of Bridgeport, Texas; daughter, Lindee Hand and husband Michael of Chico, Texas; grandchildren, Brent Hand and wife Stephanie, Brian Hand, Breann Cox and husband Steven, Connor Berry, and Caiden Berry; great-grandchildren, Christian Hand and wife Becca, Camden Hand, Taryn Lunsford, Linden Lunsford, Kambree Hand, Abby Hand, Carly Hand, Cara Hand, Austin Cox, Ally Cox; great-great-grandchildren, Westin Estep and Charlie Maldonado.
