A funeral mass for John Weiland, 86, of Runaway Bay, Texas, will be held at 11 am Friday, May 26, 2023, at St. John the Baptizer Catholic Church in Bridgeport, Texas. Visitation will be at 10 am, one hour prior to the service, at the church. Captain John Anthony Weiland, also known as “Jack,” departed his home and began his final flight on May 23, 2023.
Born in Iowa on September 27, 1936, to John and Sylvia Weiland, his early years were spent on his family farm harvesting corn. In 1957, he married Sharon Wageman. Jack and Sharon then went on to have three children: Patricia, Jeff, and Craig.
Always looking to the skies, Jack began his career as a commercial pilot, flying for the governor of Iowa. He later relocated his family to a ranch in Texas to continue his dream of flying for Delta Airlines. Jack retired in 1995 and continued to pursue his flying ambitions. He purchased the Kezer Airport in Springtown, Texas, where they lived for 21 years.
Jack was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.
Jack is survived by his wife of 66 years, Sharon Weiland; children Patty Short and husband Michael of Chico, Craig Weiland and wife Jana of Llano, and daughter-in-law Malynda Weiland; grandchildren Amy Story, Stephanie Short, John Weiland, Tamara Cabe, Cody Weiland, and Kyle Weiland; and many great-grandchildren.
Jack is preceded in death by his parents John and Sylvia Weiland; siblings Dan and Bernice; and son Jeff Weiland.
