George Lee Cowley

Services for George Lee Cowley, 90, of Alvord, Texas will be 11:00 am Saturday, February 9, 2019 at First Baptist Church in Chico, officiated by Brother Tom Merritt and Frank Lovett. Burial will follow in Crafton Cemetery. Pallbearers are Jimmy Coker, Tommy Haworth, Jerry Thompson, Kyle Allison, Jimmy Hopkins, and Warren Sosa. Honorary pallbearers are Lloyd Beckworth, Kenneth Hopkins, and Noah Ruddick. Visitation will be Friday, February 8 from 6-8 pm, at Jones Family Funeral Home in Bridgeport. George passed away Tuesday, February 5 in Bridgeport.

George was born at home November 11, 1928 in Wise County, Texas to Mose Middleton and Fanny Pauline (Allen) Cowley. George married his wife of 40 years, Jeanne Makings on October 6, 1978.

He was a devout, praying man who loved God, family and country. George served our country in Korea from 1950-1952.

George worked for a rock crusher in Chico, Texas for 38 years. After retiring he bailed hay for the public until he was 88 years old.

His enjoyed raising blue heelers, bird dogs, and cows. But his passion was hunting, fishing, and kids. He was a devoted husband and father.

George had little schooling but was a well of information and great stories of his life. He so loved his friends and family, and was generous to a fault.

He leaves behind wife Jeanne Cowley of Alvord; son Donnie Cowley of Bridgeport; many nieces and nephews, and great- and great-great nieces and nephews, who he loved all dearly; and special neighbors who also make family great Joe and Teresa Loffenholtz, and Frank and Jan Lovett.

George was preceded in death by his parents; son LeeRoy Cowley; brothers Thomas ‘Doc’, Jim and Curtis Cowley; sisters Elsie Milton, Barbara ‘Jackie’ Mountz, Lucy Wines and Della Mae Dye; and several nieces and nephews.
