Lula Fern Hughes, 84, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by family, on May 15, 2017. She was born October 7, 1932, to Jackson and Dollie Porter. Fern was born on the family farm, in the Dunbar community, near Emory, Texas. She attended the Dunbar school through eighth grade, and went on to graduate from Emory High in 1950. She then moved to Dallas, Texas, and was employed in banking until she married Johnny Hughes on May 2, 1952, and moved to Decatur, Texas.
Fern is best remembered as a dairy farmer, and as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She will also be remembered as a devoted Christian, having been an active member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church until her death. Many people enjoyed her tales of “how things used to be” in the church newsletter.
Fern is survived by: son John Hughes and wife Lesley, of Farmington, Missouri; daughter, Tretha Martin and husband Randy Martin of Paradise, Texas; sons Perry Hughes and Robert Hughes, both of Decatur, Texas; and granddaughters, Erin Hughes and Kari Hughes of North Pole, Alaska.
Memorial services for Fern Hughes will be held on Saturday, June 10, 2017, at 10:00 AM, at Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 1295 Greenwood Rd, Decatur, TX 76234. While flowers are appreciated, the family asks that mourners please instead consider donating to Oak Grove UMC in Fern’s name.
