Bobby Actkinson, a beloved former educator and coach, passed away on September 13, 2024, in Decatur, Texas. Born on July 17, 1945, in Muleshoe, Texas, to Theo and Dora (Stanford) Actkinson, Bobby dedicated his life to the growth and development of young athletes and students, leaving an indelible mark on the community he served.
Bobby pursued higher education with great passion, earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education. His commitment to fostering talent and instilling values through sports led him to a fruitful career in coaching and administration. He began his professional journey as an assistant coach, eventually rising to the esteemed position of athletic director and football coach at Decatur in 1976, where he would serve for 15 remarkable years. Under his leadership, the Decatur football program enjoyed significant success, making five postseason trips and achieving its second trip to the state semifinals in 1988. His exemplary performance earned him the recognition of District 10-2A’s Coach of the Year in 1979.
In February 1992, Bobby transitioned to the role of athletic director and head football coach at Chico. He continued to inspire and guide student-athletes for six seasons, leading Chico to its lone playoff appearance during his tenure in 1994. After resigning from Chico in 1997, he moved to Irving ISD in Irving, Texas, as an offensive line coach for six years. After moving back to Wise County, continued to share his expertise as a coach and teacher in Springtown and later served as the offensive line coach at Paradise, further demonstrating his unwavering commitment to education and athletics.
Away from his professional life, Bobby found joy in hobbies such as football, travel, and history. His love for these pursuits reflected his vibrant spirit and zest for life, which he shared with those around him.
Those left to cherish Bobby’s memory are his loving wife of 27 years Jeana Actkinson; sons, Kevin Actkinson and Ches Actkinson; daughter, Kelle Actkinson; grandchildren, Colby, Nick, Anthony, Isaiah, Wesley, and Chloe Lee; and great-grandchild Ava Actkinson.
